Text: Titus 2:11-14 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.

• For The Grace of God has appeared bringing salvation to ALL men.

1. The Incarnation of the Lord Jesus. The grace of God appeared bodily in Christ and also as an action from a loving and merciful God.

2. Jesus came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10)

3. All have sinned. (Romans 3:10; Romans 3:23)

4. He came to save all men. (Romans 5:8) But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. The message of grace arrived in Crete with Paul and Titus. When the Gospel light is turned on in a place of darkness, changes are inevitable. Those who respond are transformed; but those who resist and reject the message can do so, but must face the consequences.

• Instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts.

1. Say “NO!” to the attractions of the world (Use # 243, Great Songs of the Church). All of Paul’s instructions in Titus 2:1-10 can be summed up in this 11th verse: “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.” Believers must refuse any action that lacks reverence for God. Ungodliness mean a lack of love or total disregard for God. (Rom. 1:18) We live in an age when many totally reject God’s influence in any are of life. Christians must renounce that attitude.

2. Seek His Kingdom First. (Matt. 6:33) But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

3. Worldly passions are desires for the pleasures and activities of this world.

• And to live soberly, righteously and godly in this present world.

1. Live in the world but not of the world (I John 2:15-17) Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. Christians live “in this present age” but do not live like it or for it.

2. We must not be conformed to this world (Rom. 12:1-2)

3. Christians must not only renounce ungodliness and worldly passions; they must replace these desires with positive characteristics. To fight against lust, we must say no to temptation, but we must also say yes to service for Christ.

4. ‘Greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.” (I John 4:4). The power to live as a Christian comes from the Holy Spirit.

5. God’s salvation by grace directs our lives in “this present age.”

• Looking for that Blessed Hope” (NIV –“while we wait for the Blessed Hope.”)

1. Paul gives us a wonderful motivation for all this righteous living—believers are waiting for a hope that is already a certainty; the Second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. We can look forward to Christ’s return with eager anticipation and hope.

2. “Blessed Hope” Paul brings out 2 aspects of Christian Living that must be stressed today. (1) waiting with anticipation and (2) hoping for Christ’s glorious appearing. The waiting is good for us: it builds our character, endurance and perseverance. The hoping makes the waiting bearable.

3. C. S. Lewis wrote: “It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have been ineffective in this. Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in; aim at earth and you will get neither.”

4. In the tern “wait,” we find the tension of an eager expectation.

5. Jesus is the only hope this world has.

6. The world has many anchors, but Jesus is the only one that holds. Will your anchor hold in the storms of life?

7. He is returning for His bride (John 14:1-3) “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

8. Live your life expecting His return soon!

• “And the Appearing of the Glory of Our Great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.”

1. This passage stresses the teaching of the Deity of Christ.

1. Christ’s appearing is meant to be a comfort (I Thes. 4:18) “Therefore, encourage one another with these words.”

2. We will receive the “Crown of Righteousness.” (2 Tim. 4:6-8” “For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not to me only, but also to all who have longed for His appearing.”

• “Who Gave Himself.”

1. Jesus came to “seek and to save the lost.” He came to bear our sins. He came to die in our place.

2. The “Great God and our Savior” (Titus 2:13) whose return believers await, is the same Jesus who came to earth and died for us. Christ’s act of sacrifice is summed up in the words “gave Himself.” He gave Himself voluntarily.

• “That He Might Redeem Us from Every Lawless Deed.”

1. All are lost (Rom. 6:23) ‘For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

2. We need a Redeemer! He gave Himself on our behalf. First that He might redeem us. It means to purchase our release from the captivity of sin with a ransom.

3. “Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe.”

4. ‘years I spent in vanity and pride caring not my Lord was crucified, knowing not it was for me He died, at Calvary.”

5. “O, the love that drew salvation’s plan, O, the grace that brought it down to man, O, the mighty gulf that God did span, at Calvary.”

6. “Mercy there was great and grace was free; pardon there was multiplied to me; there my burdened soul found liberty, at Calvary.”

• “And To Purify For Himself a People For His own Possession, Zealous For Good Works.”

1. His own people, the church (Matthew 16:13-18) When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” o they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

2. We are a Royal Priesthood. (I Peter 2:9-11) But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

3. We work because we are saved. Grace says you get the privilege to work.

4. We should live according to God’s will, zealous for good works. Then, when Christ returns, He will find us ready, watching, waiting and working for Him.

TEXT: Ephesians 6:10-20 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age,[a] against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— 19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

A Call To War!

The following article written by the late Bro. Carl Kitzmiller appeared in the “Locust Street Laborer” back in the early 1990′s.

“You would not think it, to see some Christians, that there is much of a battle going on. There seems to be an idea abroad that when we are born again we are put in a bandbox, and labeled for Heaven, and marked, This side up, handle with care.” But the Christian experience is not a mere picnic. There is a war going on, and the world, the flesh, and the devil, and all the forces of darkness are against us when we take our stand in this world to please Him! And therefore, it is well that we should face up to this battle.”

Many times in his writings the Apostle Paul used military imagery in describing spiritual things. One reason for this was that in many parts of the Roman Empire, the presence of the military was out in full force. Paul used illustrations and terms that the people were accustomed to.

In Ephesians 6:10-17 he wrote about “taking up the whole armor of God.”. What did he mean? Paul was using the imagery of the different parts of the Roman soldier’s armor to illustrate some very important ways that a Christian can be equipped for service to the Lord Jesus.

Most of the armor is of a defensive nature and some offensive. The Roman government provided their armies with everything they would need to do battle. They were equipped for service to Caesar. How much more should the child of the King be equipped for service to the Lord.

Paul took the different parts of the soldier’s armor and made spiritual application. In Ephesians 6:10 he says “be strong in the Lord…”. Paul reminds us that our battle is not against an enemy we can see on the battlefield, but on a spiritual one, that is, Satan, himself. If we will let Him, the Lord will equip us door this battle. One important aspect we must understand up front is that we cannot win the battle in our own strength, but can, with the help of the Holy Spirit, win the battle. It is as the Word of God says, “greater is He. Who is in you than he who is the world.”

Verses 14-17 speak of defensive weapons by which we can protect ourselves in this battle. It is in the later part of verse 17 that we are introduced to the offensive weapon, the “sword of the spirit which is the Word of God.”

The Word of God is powerful! Paul told us in 2nd Timothy 3:16-17 that the Word is inspired of God. It is “profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

If we are willing to not only read God’s Word but to study it, mediate upon it, and tell others about it, we will “grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ,” – we will be able to help and encourage other believers as we serve in the Lord’s army.

The hymn writer, Sabine Baring-Gould penned these famous words, “Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, with the cross of Jesus going on before; Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe, forward into battle, see His banners go.”. Let’s go forward lifting up the Name of the Lord Jesus before a lost and dying world, reaching the lost with the Gospel and strengthening the saved!

Phil. 3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

2 Tim. 4:6-8 6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.

Titus 2:11-14 11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.

We Have a Heavenly Citizenship

“For our citizenship is in Heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus,” (Phil. 3:20).

We thank God that the Holy Spirit inspired (2 Timothy 3:16-17) the writers of the Bible to write in terms that we can understand. Most of us are familiar with the word “citizenship.” We understand that we are citizens of the United States of America. We are “Americans.” We further understand that this right has many responsibilities and duties as well as privileges. We are to obey the laws of the land.

The Apostle Paul’s use of the word “citizenship” in Phil 3:20 has great importance for us in a spiritual way. Since we are “in Christ,” and therefore a Christian, we have certain responsibilities and privileges.

2 Timothy 4, chronologically is the last book the Apostle Paul wrote. It has been called “The Last Will & Testament” of Paul. We dealt with verses 1-5 in our previous lesson.

This is the second imprisonment of Paul, not to be confused with the first imprisonment in Acts 28. This is in Rome in the reign of Nero, probably around A.D. 67. Paul is facing execution for his faith. As a Roman citizen he will be beheaded instead of crucified.

The Last Will & Testament of Paul (vs. 6-8) Paul tells us he knows his time is short (v. 6). He is not bitter; he knows he has been faithful & that he serves a Lord who is equally faithful.

In verse 7 Paul recounts his walk for Jesus. He says ‘I have fought the good fight – I Tim. 6:12ff; I have finished the course (race) I Cor. 9:24-27 “The Imperishable (Incorruptible (KJV) Crown and I have kept the faith (Jude 3)

Verse 8 The Result of a life lived for Jesus and one based on living in expectation of the return of the Lord Jesus. What can we learn from Paul’s example:

Jesus is coming back personally

Rewards (Crowns) are to be obtained through faithful service.

The Crown of Righteousness (v What is the basis of receiving this crown? Believing that Jesus is coming again and living a life of expectation of this fact.

Who gives the crown?—the faithful judge, Jesus. Paul had seen many unfaithful and unfair judges.

Who will receive the Crown of Righteousness? All who love the Lord’s Coming.

Titus 2:11-14 “Christian Living In Expectation of the Return of the Lord Jesus!

Introduction: The Lord Jesus is coming back for His Church. This great truth and promise is all over the Word of God. In John 14:1-4 we read the following

1 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

In Acts 1:11, we have the testimony of the angels at the Ascension: “…Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This SAME Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

In I Thes. 1:9-10 the Apostle Paul commends the church at Thessalonica for their service to the Lord. He recounts in I Thes. 1:9 their journey from idolatry to serving Jesus. He further states that they were a serving congregation. Since we serve the “living and true God,” Since he could come at any moment—we must be ready at all times—we must be active in His work at all times. We must put our faith into action. We must be seeking the lost and striving to strengthen the saved. Mission work and evangelism does not stop with conversion—the more we learn about Jesus and His Church and the Word of God—we will be mission minded.

Jesus has told us to be waiting and watching for the time he will come back for us. But we must not be idle; we must as the song goes, “we’ll work ‘till Jesus comes.” Some in the New Testament were condemned because they were not active in the Lord’s service while waiting for His coming. That must never be said of us. We will be rescued from the wrath to come (I Thes. 1:10), so let’s allow Jesus to equip us for service. He has provided much for us if we will only appropriate it. Let’s always seek to reach the lost and strengthen the saved!

In Titus 2:11-14 the Apostle Paul tells us how to live for Jesus while we are waiting for His coming.

“For the grace of God has appeared bringing salvation to all men.” We find these words in Titus 2:11. This is the opening passage to the thoughts in Titus 2:11-15. This passage might be titled “Christian Living in Expectation of the Return of Jesus.”

In this passage “grace” is both a person and an action. It is evident to the reader that this verse is talking about the Incarnation of the Lord Jesus. In the fullness of time, God sent forth His Son”¦” (Gal. 4:4-5) to redeem mankind. God had promised throughout the Old Testament to send forth the Redeemer prophesied in Genesis 3:15. Jesus came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10); He came to save all mankind (Romans 5:8).

This grace is also an action. The saving grace of Jesus illustrates His great love for mankind. God so loved the world (John 3:16). It is in this action that we have the Godhead showing forth this great love towards mankind.

The main crux of the verse is that both of these thoughts in Titus 2:11 bring salvation. There is no salvation outside of Jesus (John 14:6; and Acts 4:12). Let’s embrace Jesus as our Savior and Lord and never fail to praise Him and thank Him for His great mercy “in that while we were yet sinners.” He died for us.

What Does It Means to “Wait for His Son from Heaven.” The Apostle Paul commends the Christians in Thesalonika for their faithfulness. He tells them that the news of their faith has spread beyond their home. Other Christians have heard of the commitment to the Lord Jesus. (I Thes. 1:6-8). In I Thes. 1:6 we are told that they were imitators of the Lord. It was not a “bed of roses” for them when they accepted the Lord Jesus and began to follow Him.

They became an example to others-Oh that it could be said of us today that we live lives so close to Jesus that others will want to “conform to the image of the Son of God.” They left a life of idol worship with no hope of salvation and no hope of an eternity outside of the “Lake of Fire.” We are told in I Thes. 1:9 that they made a complete turn around in their lives and identified with the Lord Jesus Christ.

I Thes. 1:10 gives us the words in our title. Jesus is coming again! That is not just a pipe dream, it is a reality! We don’t know when He will come; it may be today. We are told here to be “waiting” for His return.

What does that entail? Waiting for the Lord Jesus in the Scripture means that while we are waiting we are “watching,” and working for Him. We sing a song written by Fanny Crosby, “Blessed are those whom the Lord finds watching, In His glory they shall share; If He shall come at the dawn or midnight, Will He find us watching there?” True waiting involves working for the Lord Jesus; not a working to be saved but a working because you are saved. We are saved by grace through faith, in baptism unto good works. Let’s be like the Thessalonians and be a people who live our lives for the Lord so that others see us and glorify God. (Matthew 5:14-16).
