1. The last verse of chapter 4 said that men began to call upon the Lord. What was it that they appealed to the Lord for? Whatever it might have been, the Lord heard that cry and tended to it in the way that He determined best.

2. In His mercy (6:8) He gave Noah a charge, a charge to preach the Lord’s destruction that was forth coming (cf. Jude 14-15). It was also in the Lord’s mercy that Noah was a preacher of righteousness for over one hundred years (6:3).

3. A key verse in this chapter is verse 5 (cf. 12): the inclinations of man’s heart was only evil continually and, as it was then, it is today. As the Lord looked on the earth He saw one stand apart from the rest: Noah. Another key verse in this chapter is verse 8: Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. The reason for this is because he walked with God, he did according to all that God commanded him.

4. Application: Two key verses: 1) those who do evil receive the Lord’s judgment, 2) those who are of an obedient heart find the Lord’s favor. Note how Scripture describes him: he was a just man, perfect in his generations and he walked with God (6:9). The word “just” (NKJV) is rendered “blameless” in the NIV. He was not blameless to the point of having no sin, but blameless in the respect that Lord looked upon him with favor. Because he was obedient to the Lord’s will the Lord’s love overlooked much (cf. 1 Peter 4:8).
